Zaleplon is a lesser-known member of the 'Z-drug' family. Sold under the brand name Sonata among other, Zaleplon is a nonbenzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic. This is a licensed generic medication which is produced and sold worldwide, largely online, including on our website. It is primarily used for the treatment of insomnia and occasionally for anxiety. There are different types of both insomnia and anxiety, and we will discuss the symptoms, causes, and treatment options a little later.

As we mentioned, Zaleplon tablets are sold under the brand name Sonata, and this was the original patented brand. It was developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999. When the patent for a medication expires, other pharmaceutical companies can apply to the FDA generic drug program for a licence to sell it themselves.

This is what happened when the Pfizer patent ran out in 2008. Until then, they had the sole rights to sell the medication. As the costs associated with developing a medication are so high, including researching the effects of the drug on a chemical level, three phases of clinical trials, and licensing applications, the pharmaceutical company that funds this needs a fair chance to make their money back. If they did not have exclusive rights for a number of years, other pharmaceutical companies could simply copy their work and manufacture the medication without having to invest a huge amount of money, thereby being able to sell it much cheaper, and out compete the original company.

When the patent does expire, it is fair game. Generic medication is significantly more affordable for the reasons just mentioned, and they get cheaper still as more and more companies produce it. Are you looking for affordable medication? Do you want a medication that works effectively? Need treatment but cannot get a prescription? Well, you are in luck. You can buy Zaleplon online in the UK without the need for a prescription from our pharmacy.

What is Zaleplon?

As we mentioned before, there are two main Zaleplon indications which are insomnia and anxiety. There are three main types of insomnia: sleep-onset insomnia, sleep-maintenance insomnia, and transient insomnia. Sleep-onset insomnia is characterised by finding it difficult to fall asleep at night. The amount of time it takes varies between individuals and it can be anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Sleep-maintenance insomnia is characterised by finding it difficult to stay asleep throughout the night or waking up too early and not being able to fall asleep again.

Transient insomnia occurs due to disturbance in the sleep-wake cycle, for example by working day and night shifts, or as a result of jet lag. In addition to the three main types of insomnia, they can be further characterised as acute and chronic, with the former lasting for less than three months, and the latter lasting for over three months. There are several potential causes for insomnia which can include the following:

  • Poor sleep hygiene
  • Mental health problems
  • Stress
  • Medication

Anxiety can be categorised into different types as well, with the most common being generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). You may be suffering from GAD if you have the following symptoms:

  • Worrying all the time about many different things
  • Feeling a sense of dread
  • Feeling like something awful is going to happen
  • Feeling irritable
  • Not being able to sleep

It is natural to feel anxious from time to time, for example if you have an important event coming up or you are entering an anxiety inducing situation like starting a new job or meeting your partners parents for the first time. This sense of anxiety would be considered a disorder if the symptoms are occurring for no apparent reason, or they are so frequent or distressing that they are impacting on your ability to function. If you are experiencing symptoms of insomnia or anxiety, then help is available. We will now discuss the Zaleplon mechanism of action and how this treatment option could help you manage your symptoms.

How Does Zaleplon Work?

Zaleplon works by targeting the central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord and has millions of nerve cells called neurons, which attach to the peripheral nervous system throughout the rest of the body. Information is passed from the central nervous system to the rest of the body using electrical signals, and the level of electrical activity is regulated by chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters can be either excitatory or inhibitory, with the former increasing electrical activity and the latter decreasing activity.

The Zaleplon active ingredient binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the brain, which are the most abundant receptors of any type. This means that medication that targets these receptors are highly effective. After binding to the receptors, they are stimulated to produce and secrete the GABA neurotransmitter. This is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which has hypnotic and anxiolytic properties, so it reduces electrical activity in the brain. When certain signals are reduced it leads to relaxation and sedation. These properties make you feel calmer and more relaxed and can help you to fall asleep.

When to Take Zaleplon

If you are taking Zaleplon tablets for insomnia, then you should take them just before you go to bed. If you are taking them for anxiety, then you should take one tablet in the morning and re-dose as necessary throughout the day. Some people experience social anxiety or panic attacks, in which case you should take your dose before entering an anxiety inducing situation or when you feel your symptoms coming on. Tablets should always be swallowed whole without crushing the medication in any way to stop it entering your system too quickly.

After taking Zaleplon, it is rapidly absorbed by the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where is passes into the bloodstream, crosses the blood brain barrier, and enters the brain to bind with the GABA receptors. The absorption rate may vary slightly depending on factors such as your metabolism, body mass index (BMI), and whether you take the medication with food or not. People with a faster metabolism usually experience the Zaleplon benefits more rapidly than people with a slower metabolism. Similarly, people with a lower BMI may feel the effects of the medication more quickly than those with a higher BMI. Taking Zaleplon with food should not alter how much of the medication is absorbed, however it may slow the absorption rate.

Zaleplon Dosage Information

Zaleplon 10mg is the typical starting and maintenance dose, however this can be reduced or increased if needed. Zaleplon 5mg is the lowest dose issued and can be useful for people who are sensitive to sleeping tablets, those with contraindications, or for the elderly. Lower doses may not be affective enough for everybody, but it is always best to start on the lowest dose that is effective as this type of medication leads to increased tolerance over time.

When your tolerance increases, you will not benefit to the same extent, and you will need to increase your dose to reach the same benefit. Zaleplon 20mg is the highest dose available and should only be taken for severe symptoms or when lower doses are no longer effective enough. Some people choose to buy Zaleplon 10mg so that they can split it in half or take two if necessary.

This is an ultrashort-acting sedative hypnotic, which means the Zaleplon duration of action is significantly shorter than other similar sleeping pills such as other Z drugs or benzodiazepines. Typically, the Zaleplon onset of action occurs after 5 to 15 minutes, which again, is much faster than other similar medications which take around 30 minutes to start working. You should feel the effects of the medication for around 3 hours as the Zaleplon elimination half-life is 1.5 hours on average.

As it has such a rapid onset of action, it is particularly useful for sleep-onset insomnia and panic attacks. Its short durations of action, however, means it is not the best option for sleep-maintenance insomnia. As it has such a short elimination half-life, it is much safer to perform complex tasks such as driving the following day compared to other sedatives, as long as there is a 12-hour gap between taking Zaleplon and driving.

Zaleplon Side Effects

Unfortunately, all medication has the potential to cause side effects, and the same is true of Zaleplon. Luckily, most people find any side effects that they experience are mild and go away on their own without any need for intervention. They do affect some people however, so before you buy Zaleplon you should familiarise yourself with potential adverse effects. Some common Zaleplon side effects include the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache

If you stay well hydrated, you should be able to avoid most of the above side effects. Although it is very rare, some people experience serious side effects. Severe Zaleplon side effects to be aware of include the following:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Amnesia
  • Losing your balance

If you experience any of the above, then you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek professional advice. This is also very rare, but some people experience a severe allergic reaction after taking Zaleplon called anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis, also called anaphylactic shock, include a rash on the face and neck or blotchy skin, swelling of the face and lips, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Anaphylaxis is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention. It is important to note that not everyone will get a rash or blotchy skin, so if you have the other symptoms without a rash, you still need to get urgent help. Thankfully, allergic reactions to this extent are largely unheard of.

Use Zaleplon Safely

Some people who take Zaleplon experience abnormal sleep behaviours which can potentially be dangerous. They include sleepwalking, driving, cooking, having sex, and making phone calls. As people are not fully awake when they do these things, most people do not remember that anything has happened. You should not buy Zaleplon if you have a history of sleepwalking or other abnormal sleep behaviour.

As we mentioned earlier, Zaleplon increases your tolerance over time. This means that it should ideally be used as a short-term treatment option, to reduce the risk of dependence and rebound insomnia. If you have chronic insomnia then it may not be possible to take a short course of medication, and many people require long-term treatment. If you can, you should take it for 3 days or less per week, spacing the days out evenly throughout the week. You could take different medications on different days, for example an antihistamine that causes drowsiness. Some antihistamines can make you feel drowsy the next day however, so make sure you take extra care if you must drive or perform skilled tasks the following day.
